In The Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, which is read on the first four evenings of Great Lent, and again on Wednesday evening of the fifth week, there are many references to Old Testament people and events. Unless one has studied the Old Testament, many of these references will be rather obscure. For example, Who are Jannes and Jamres? Who was Ahithophel? Why did the earth swallow Korah, Dathan, Abiram and those with them?
Who's Who in St. Andrew's Canon was written to help answer questions like these. Knowing these references will hopefully enrich the understanding and fruitfulness of hearing this wonderful canon of repentance.
